Fun and Games

It's not always all fun and games at CISC, but last Friday afternoon it was, anyway. We closed up shop at noon for the annual agency picnic, and headed out to Newcastle Beach Park on Lake Washington.

Staff got a much deserved break, enjoyed good food, fresh air and perfect weather! Games included trust building and team building activities, and disaster preparedness awareness. OK, so we just can't help it...

We're now all charged up, and ready go back to work!

Cathay Bank

Congratulations to our corporate sponsor, Cathay Bank, who opened their third and newest branch in Bellevue on Friday!

CISC board member Martin Liang is manager of the new office and welcomed Bellevue Deputy Mayor John Chelminiak, Councilmembers Conrad Lee and Phil Noble, Cathay Bank board of directors who flew up from LA, and CISC Executive Director, Alaric Bien who all participated in the official ribbon cutting.

Seattle Aquarium Comes to CISC

Outreach staff from the Seattle Aquarium came out to our summer youth program today to talk about what they can see on the beach. This is in preparation for next week's trip to the South Alki Beach conservation area.

The kids learned about different marine animals (Do you know what a Tidepool Sculpin is??), how to handle them in the wild, and why the ocean is so important to our environment.

This is just one of many fun (but educational) activities the kids enjoy in our summer program. If you can't get to the beach this summer, at least go check out the newly renovated Seattle Aquarium!

Sunshine Garden Seniors at ID Summer Festival

Once again, members of Sunshine Garden Senior Day Center provided the official kick off for the ID Summer Festival on the main stage in Hing Hay Park.

Seniors demonstrated 9-movement tai chi for fall prevention, magic tricks they learned at the center, and an 18-movement series of tai chi.

Sunshine Garden provides educational, health, social, and physical activities to help keep our seniors healthy, active, and connected to their community in their later years.

Vietnamese Children's Day

Our Vietnamese Children's Day celebration was held on Saturday and we had over 50 families attend! Activities included singing, dancing, story telling, and of course, lots of food!

We also used this opportunity to kick off a new Play and Learn group every Saturday morning from 10:00 to 12:00 in the CISC reception area. This group will be done in Vietnamese and English. For more information on our Play and Learn activities, please contact Hueiling Chan at 206-624-5633 x 4139 or hueilingc@cisc-seattle.org

We Beat the Heat!

Don't know if you remember, but last year about this time (June 26, to be exact), we endured scorching temperatures in our old offices, with fans blowing hot air directly into our faces in a vain attempt to keep cool, and agency issued popsicles.

What a difference a year makes! Not only do we have air conditioning, but our staff, clients, and volunteers are all enjoying being at CISC today. So if you're feeling hot and cranky today, come on by and hang out with us as we watch the mercury rise!

Friendship Dinner & Auction Photos

Class of 2007

Today, we graduated our first class of pre-K program participants. Because of a late start up, we were only able enroll 3 students for the entire first year, but we already have a waiting list for next September!

This program helps prepare 4 year old Seattle residents to succeed in school. We do this through the only bilingual Mandarin/English pre-K program in the state.

The change in the children since last September has been dramatic. They now have no problem following teacher's instructions, taking turns, use scissors safely, and much more. But perhaps most important of all is that their love of learning has blossomed tremendously.

For more information on this program, please contact Hueiling Chan at hueilingc@cisc-seattle.org or 206-624-5633 x 4139.

The Beehive Debuts in Seattle

What is the Beehive anyway? It's a web site that aims to help make life easier by providing a single interactive place to connect you to important information on money, jobs, school, childcare, housing, and much, much more. Today, the Beehive launched its Seattle site, joining dozens of other cities around the country.

CISC is partnering with One Economy to create information that is useful to our community, in our languages. (Currently, information is only available in English and Spanish.) You can also read about the real experiences of new immigrants, including Yanna Fang and Auntie Jie. Go to www.beehiveseattle.org and click on Stories from a New America (behind the American flag). Or just click on this link.

2007 Friendship Dinner a Huge Success!

For those of you who weren't able to join us, this year's Friendship Dinner & Auction was an event to remember! Over 400 guests bid on items large and small, from a Swarovski crystal key chain to Diamond Club Mariner seats.

This year's focus was on continuing our legacy of service to the community and building on our first 35 years of success. As we move into the future, we work in early learning, services for youth and their families is critical to ensure that we create opportunities for success - in school, at work, and in life.

Because of generous corporate sponsorship, 100% of the funds raised from this event (over $125,000) goes directly to CISC services like our early learning program. Thank you to our supporters and our sponsors:

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

On Monday, we had over 100 seniors line up outside our offices as early as 4:00 am to try to access vouchers for low income seniors to use at farmers markets. These $40 vouchers had to be accessed at the Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens, but because our seniors (and many other in the community) do not speak English, they came to us for help.

The city only had 3 phone lines open and our staff and volunteers were only able to get vouchers for 17 individuals in the first 2 hours.

Eventually, all of the seniors were able to obtain vouchers and are looking forward to using them to obtain farm fresh fruits and vegetables.

CISC Blog in the News!

We didn't think we were doing anything particularly innovative or exciting, but evidently our blog has spawned a great deal of interest in the nonprofit world.

As you know, it started with the construction updates during our building phase. But we decided to continue to use it as a more timely way to let our friends and supporters know about all the wonderful work CISC does.

Take a look at the piece in the Nonprofit Board Report. And don't forget to send a link and tell your friends!

Crime Victims Services

CISC is happy to announce that we will be able to continue our crime victims services in Snohomish County for another year.

Until recently, the state provided funding for us to do this work throughout the Puget Sound region. However, they have now divided up the money so that in order to provide the same level of services, we get to work through three separate grant application processes for Snohomish, King, and Pierce counties. Go figure.

We're just happy to have continued support to do the work. See the article in the Everett Herald.

9th Annual Chinatown ID/Little Saigon Spring Clean-Up

What a mouthful! But despite all the words, CISC this year put together another team into action to participate in this community wide event. Staff, board and volunteers all pitched in to help make this event a success.

Traditionally the largest of the neighborhood clean ups in Seattle, we saw hundreds of friends and neighbors working together to make this part of our city just a little bit better place to live, work, and play!

Promoting School Readiness

Today, we had a group from the National League of Cities, United Way, Thrive by Five and Born Learning visit the play and learn group at our International Family Center - Seattle. These visitors came from all over the United States to learn about best practices for promoting school readiness, especially in immigrant communities.

Besides hearing stories and singing songs in Chinese, Vietnamese and English, children and their caregivers (some dads and grandfathers among them) worked on school readiness skills through crafts, movement and play.

CISC is one of a small number of organizations nationwide that provide bilingual/bicultural school readiness activities. And they're free to participants!

Organized Crime in Seattle and Beyond

As part of our commitment to building and maintaining a safe community, CISC participated in a presentation at the International Conference of Asian Organized Crime and Terrorism last week in Las Vegas.

CISC crime victim advocate Alan Lai is on the Washington State Advisory Committee on Trafficking and lent his expertise, along with other committee members, to the discussion with local, state, federal and international representatives from 23 different countries.

Other presenters spoke about the technological sophistication of many of today's criminals, using high tech networking to plan and communicate their crimes across geographic and international boundaries.
